“The rich are wise in their own eyes, but the poor who has understanding sees through them.”
-Proverbs 28:11 (NIV)
Wisdom vs. Wealth
Have we confused knowledge of gaining wealth with wisdom?
In a world where bank accounts, influencers and celebrities living in luxery, and social media followers are treated as proof of wisdom, Proverbs 28:11 is a breath of clarity. It challenges the modern obsession with material success and reminds us to dig deeper — by practicing discernment.
What Does Proverbs 28:11 Really Mean?
This scripture isn’t condemning wealth — it’s revealing the illusion that often comes with it.
The rich may assume that their financial success is due to their superior wisdom. According to the Bible, it’s possible (and common) to be financially rich and spiritually deluded. Discernment isn’t based on what you have, but how clearly you see. There is also the matter of the vast number of super wealthy people seeking pleasure as a source of fulfillment because no matter how successful they are they are not satisfied. Their relationships are in shambles, because money cannot buy authenticity, intimacy or life-long loyalty.
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
-Matthew 16:26
Sometimes, those with less materially are the ones who see most clearly.
The Danger of Being “Wise in Your Own Eyes”
Self-reliance is seductive. When we succeed by the world’s standards, we can start to believe we don’t need feedback, growth, or even God. That’s the core of this proverb — a warning against pride disguised as success.
We’ve all seen it:
• The leader who won’t listen.
• The influencer who equates followers and luxury with truth.
• The millionaire who lacks moral compass.
Wealth may elevate you, but it doesn’t always enlighten you.
