Grounding and the Beach

Life

Why the ocean heals you in ways you didn’t expect.

Let’s be honest, if you are a beach lover, who doesn’t feel grounded at the beach? Spending time at the beach is like hitting Control + Alt + Delete on your nervous system. The moment my feet sink into warm sand and I hear the rhythmic crashing of the waves, something inside me exhales. I remember how good it feels to let go, be present, at peace and I am reminded that I am part of something eternal. My brain immediately submits to the awe and power of my environment and I find that I without fail enter into a prayer like state.

What if that sense of peace isn’t just me on vacation? What if the beach actually rewires us on a biological level?

Today we will visit the powerful science-backed practice of grounding, and the oceans role in restoring your nervous system, heart, and sense of self.

The Ocean is Nature’s Therapist

When we walk barefoot on the sand, float in saltwater, or simply lie near the shore listening to the waves, we’re not just relaxing, we’re grounding (also called “earthing”). This practice connects our body to natural energy (or current) of the Earth….which sounds “woo-woo”-but there is actually science here.

Studies show grounding reduces cortisol levels (your stress hormone)

✅It improves sleep, mood, and your heart rate variability

✅It increases electrons in your body, helping you to neutralize free radicals (aka cellular inflammation)

✅It regulates the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting a calm parasympathetic state

When you are at the beach, grounding becomes effortless. You’re barefoot, your body is touching the earth, and your senses are bathed in rhythm and delicious amounts of golden sunlight. This is why we laugh more, sleep better and often “feel like ourselves again“.

The Beach is a Love Letter to Your Nervous Sytem

Most of us are running on fumes, hyper-connected, overstimulated, and undernourished by real rest. The beach invites us back to love: Not a romantic love (althought romance happens at the beach too….Hello!). I think the beach invites us to remember intentional love: “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature” Genesis 2:7. We are wired for love and grounding is a reminder of where we came from, that we were created with intention, with love and that we should love and take care of ourselves.

*This kind of love says, “Let’s slow down

*Whispers, “You are allowed to breathe

*Reminds you that “Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed

Self-care isn’t always 75 hard, bubble baths and journaling. Sometimes it is salty, breeze, a long walk in the wet sand, or simply letting the waves wash over your ankles while you breathe in the ocean and the sun kisses your skin.

This week, my feed has been full of ocean content-and that is by design. I’ve been intentionally reconnecting to one of the most natural medicines I know: the beach. Every photo, every moment shared (and will share!) is a reminder that self-care doesn’t always require doing more-most often it asks us to come home to what already heals us.

What You can do Right Now to Ground (Beach or No Beach)

Whether you’re oceanfront or landlocked, grounding is available to you:

*Walk barefoot on grass, soil, sand or even stone!

*Lie on the ground for 10-20 minutes to reset.

*Swim in clean, natural waters: Lakes, Rivers or the Sea ?

*Practice deep breathing outdoors.

*Use grounding mats indoors if nature isn’t accessible.

And….if you are lucky enough to live near the ocean: GO. Unplug. Be barefoot. Let your feet remember your origin.

A Challenge for You: Grounding as Self-Care

Over the next 7 days, try this:

  1. Spend 5-10 minutes touching the earth daily. (Preferrably with sunrise and/or sunset)
  2. Pair it with a self-love affirmation, like: “I was made to love and be love. I was created with intention. Love created me.”
  3. Share your moment on social media (photo of story) using #groundedbylove #oceanheals or #selfcarerituals and tag me https://www.instagram.com/hshaygood/ because I would love to see it!

Let’s start a movement where slowing down is the new side hustle and loving yourself with intention is revolutionary….all of the best things come from love anyway.
